The Start of Something (Hopefully) Great

I’ve had a love of cars for as long as I can remember.  Being a kid and turning the pages of Car & Driver, and MotorTrend, or watching imported episodes of TopGear – I was hooked.  When it came time for me to go to college, I yearned to be an automotive journalist.  Unfortunately, back then I had all of the anger of Jeremy Clarkson with none of the likability.  Years later, and while I have mellowed and matured some, my love of cars still remains a strong as it did when I was a child.

Looking back at those days, I remember seeing all sorts of unobtainable cars – the McLaren F1 being chased by a helicopter as it blazed down the track, a Ferrari F50 rewriting what a supercar was, or the F40 vs the Diablo.  In my mind it would be easier to score a date with Pamela Anderson, and seeing as nothing in this paragraph has ever materialized, I guess I was right!  And just like an impressionable teenage mind seeing a beautiful woman in a red bathing suit saving distressed swimmers on the beach, I found the curves of the Shelby Cobra.  I still have the article I clipped today – pitting the new Dodge Viper against a 427 Cobra.  The Viper was amazing, but the Cobra was in a completely different league.  The curves, power, design, sound…and the half-million dollar price tag…I guess I do have good taste!

But then I saw an article about Factory Five – this small company out of Boston that gave mere mortals like me the chance to experience the otherwise unobtainable.  ‘Holy shit, this can’t be real’ I thought, and with my lack of mechanical experience (and money) it was.

Fast forward a few decades and things have changed in my life.  While lack of mechanical experience is still a major concern of mine, I am in a fortunate enough position in life where purchasing & building a FFR Roadster of my own is actually a reality.  I’ve spent the past year reading the various forums and getting acquainted with some of the legends.  Faceless people like edwardb, Jeff Kleiner, Papa, GoDadGo, et al, who had ascended into the ranks of FFR lore.

Recently, I made the decision to make my dream a reality.  I created accounts on the forums to participate, started asking the same stupid questions that newbies all have, and plotting my dream build.  Creating this site is the start of my journey in earnest.  I know it will be long road, but my hope is that the journey towards my ownership is an enjoyable one – even with the inevitable challenges I will face.

In the words of Jeremy Clarkson, “how hard could it be?”
